The UV-LED illumination that distinguishes Swiss-made UVW Watches from all other timepieces is based on patented technology (U.S. Patent Nos. 6,729,738 B2 and 6,730,530 B2. Intl. Pat. Appr.).
Most illuminated watches sold today use electroluminescent lighting under the display, which yields a muted, single-color backlighting - typically blue/green or yellow/orange - behind the dial. Our patented technology employs an “above-the-display” (ATD) ultraviolet light source that provides an extremely high contrast ratio for viewing the watch face in low light or in complete darkness.
The designs on each of our watch faces are created using fluorescents and phosphors that absorb the UV emissions and release the stored energy as visible illumination. As a result, UVW watches have three distinctly different appearances: one in daylight, another under UV-LED illumination, and a third in the afterglow once the UV-LED deactivates.
The undersurface of each UVW Watch crystal is coated with up to eighteen layers of proprietary aerospace-grade UV-blocking material, shielding the watch face from the sun's damaging UVA, UVB and UVC rays. This coating also ensures that the UV-LED emissions created inside the watch are reflected downward toward the watch face, exciting the fluorescents and phosphors. In addition, certain UVW Watch models feature an anti-reflective (AR) coating on the crystal surface, reducing glare in bright-light conditions.
This type of true technological innovation comes along only once in a generation.
